The Government of Cape Verde has introduced a Tourist Tax, as is common in many countries. The tax applies to all visitors staying in hotels, apartments, villas, and bed & breakfast establishments, etc. The tax is charged at a rate of €2 (CVE220) per person, per night for up to 10 nights to a maximum of €20 for each guest. Visitors under the age of 16 are exempt. The Government requires each establishment to collect this tax.
The Government intends to use the money it raises from this tax to improve tourism in the islands, which will include training, promotion and protection of the environment.
