Cape Verdean Basketball Player in action

Cape Verdean basketball player Edy Walter Tavares, playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Summer League, was the Cavalier’s highest scorer in their game against the Milwaukee Bucks. The 25 year old player is 7’3″ (2.21m) tall and has a ‘wingspan’ of some 7’9″ (2.36m); he was born on the island of Maio, Cape Verde.

A gift from São João da Madeira a city in the Norte region of Portugal has recently arrived in Maio. The delivery includes sports equipment, school equipment and toys. The intention being to improve sporting facilities and activities on the island. The links between São João da Madeira and Maio started in the 1990’s.

Cape Verde Paralympic success

Cape Verde has won its first ever medal in the Paralympic Games. Gracelino Tavares Barbosa won a bronze medal in the 400m T20 race in Rio de Janeiro. Gracelino, 31, was delighted to have been the first Cape Verdean to win a Paralympic medal. First place went to a Brazilian and second place to a Venezuelan. He is now hopeful that his success will encourage other people with a disability, not only in Cape Verde but also in the rest of Africa, to take up a sport. The President of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, telephoned the athlete to congratulate him.
